In the meantime, you can read on to learn some of the fundamental factors to compare as you’re shopping for garbage disposals.

There are two feed type options

The standard residential garbage disposal is available in two feed options: batch feed and continuous feed. With a batch feed disposal, you put your food into the disposal and cover it with a special stopper that turns it on. This helps to prevent accidentally turning on the disposal or having debris fly. The more common option is the continuous feed, which is easy to use. You simply put the food into it and then turn on a switch when you want it to run.

You’ll need to choose the right horsepower for your needs

There are a variety of horsepower options. The smallest are generally one-quarter horsepower and the strongest are usually one horsepower. There are of course many options in between. The right choice for each family will depend on their needs. If there are just a few of you and you don’t plan to use the garbage disposal on a daily basis, and the food you intend to put in it includes soft foods like fruit and cooked veggies, then a one-quarter or one-half horsepower motor should be fine.

However, larger families that think they’ll use their garbage disposal regularly and want to be able to put anything down it including chicken bones and raw carrots may want to get a three-quarter or even one horsepower garbage disposal motor.

Consider the noise level

When you think of a garbage disposal you’re likely not thinking of a quiet appliance. This makes sense when you consider how much grinding and pulverizing they do. It’s not likely you’re going to find a silent garbage disposal but you can find options that are quieter than others. Some come with materials that are specifically chosen for their noise-dampening abilities, and a higher horsepower motor is likely to run more quietly than a lower horsepower motor because it has to do less work to get the same amount done.

There are additional features that may be handy to you

When you work with a plumbing company to install your garbage disposal, you can learn about other features that are available. For example, some newer models offer auto-reverse, which allows you to switch up the grind direction so that you can clear out food that gets jammed. There are also garbage disposals made specifically for homes with septic tanks too they add 300 million microorganisms every time you use them so that the food will break down more easily.
